Which type of crown restoration is best?

There are three different types of dental crowns. These include:

Gold

Because of the way it both contracts and expands, as well as its level of hardness, gold is the most similar crown option compared to the natural structure of your teeth. Gold crown restorations are strong, will never tarnish or erode or wear down your other teeth in any way. Gold crowns also require less of your natural tooth to be removed.

However, not everyone finds a gold crown aesthetically pleasing. This makes gold a more practical solution for back teeth for most people, but even then, not everyone is comfortable with the idea of a gold crown.

Ceramic

For the most natural-looking crown, ceramics are where it’s at.

Ceramic crowns are lighter and made with thinner materials well known for being gentle on natural gum tissues.

However, ceramic adult crowns are less robust than the other crown options, making them a less desirable choice for back teeth, which require strength.

Porcelain Fused to Metal

This type of restorative crown is prepared with a metallic shell, then a porcelain veneer is fused onto this shell. This gives the crown a natural-looking appearance, as with ceramic crowns, and the underlying strength of the metal. This combination actually outperforms gold crowns. While it is the second strongest material, it is actually the most successful.

There are some drawbacks to this option, though. One of the biggest drawbacks of porcelain fused to metal crowns is that more of the tooth’s structure must be removed to use these crowns. This can lead to the gums becoming more vulnerable to inflammation, as well as the wearing down of nearby teeth.

What is a crown restoration?

When a dental crown is placed over an existing damaged tooth, this is called a crown restoration. This process requires a lab to custom-build a crown for the patient. Once the crown is created, the dentist removes the damaged areas of the tooth, preparing it for crown placement.

How The Dental Crown Process Works

A restorative crown process can take place, in full, across two appointments.

During your initial visit to the clinic, a range of images and measurements will be taken.
As long as there is no infection present, the dentist will then reduce the size of the damaged tooth so that an impression of your mouth can be taken.
Once you have selected the best crown for your particular situation, the crown will be ordered according to your individual measurements and color needs.
While your crown is being made, you might need to wear a temporary bridge or crown.
As soon as your own crown is ready, the clinic will contact you to come to the practice to get it fitted. This process involves placing the crown over the tooth and fixing it in place with professional dental cement.
