Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide is safe and effective and used in combination with oxygen. Inhaled via a mask that sits over your nose, nitrous oxide is one of many sedation options used in dentistry to help a patient feel calmer during certain procedures.

Nitrous oxide is an odorless, colorless gas also known as laughing gas. Nitrous oxide has been used for hundreds of years in both dental and surgical settings.

Can you still feel pain with laughing gas?

Nitrous oxide is not designed to be used as the sole form of anesthesia.

It does have an element of analgesic effects, but if you are receiving a treatment that is likely to be painful or uncomfortable, your dentist will usually also administer a local anesthetic to alleviate all pain at the site of treatment.

Nitrous oxide does slow down your nervous system, making you feel less inhibited, calmer, and totally worry-free.

Why do dentists use nitrous oxide?

Nitrous oxide is just one of a number of sedation options at Tulsa Dental Center. Nitrous is a great choice because it is effective and works quickly.

Following your procedure, breathing pure oxygen through a mask for a few minutes helps the effects of nitrous oxide wear off quickly.

This type of sedation allows you to communicate clearly with your dental team throughout your procedure, and any side effects wear off quickly.

Nitrous oxide sedation is a safe, effective option to help patients feel less nervous about their dental procedures and more relaxed and at ease during treatment.

  • Ideal for anxious or nervous patients
  • Helps to reduce choking and gag reflex
  • Promotes a sense of relaxation and calm
  • Patients can immediately return to work after the treatment

What are the side effects of Nitrous Oxide?

Side effects of nitrous oxide aren’t common, but some people may experience:

  • Shivers
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Tiredness

Once the dental procedure is complete and the nitrous oxide is switched off, the patient will receive oxygen via a mask.

This allows the nitrous oxide to begin to leave the patient’s system, as well as helps reduce the likelihood of headaches. The patient will feel more alert fairly quickly once the nitrous oxide is switched off and the oxygen is breathed in.

Nitrous oxide has been used in dentistry for over 100 years- since the late 1800s!

A safe and effective sedation option, nitrous oxide has virtually no side effects or downsides.

It can be a game-changer for nervous patients both during treatment and regarding their overall outlook regarding dental appointments.

If you’d like to discuss using dental sedation as part of your treatment, please speak with your dentist at your next appointment or call our friendly team for more information.
